Have you ever thought about what your tires actually do for you and what "roll" they play? (There not just black round & hold air.)
Have you ever wondered why race cars have slicks with no tread? (They change them when it rains.)
If you took a single 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper, cut it into four pieces, those four tiny patches are all that come in contact with the road. Now subtract the grooves in the tread, they don't touch either. Oh! Don't forget to subtract for the irregularities in the road too. That really doesn't leave much rubber to come in contact with the pavement.
So why do we have tread? The only reason we have tread on our tires is for rain & snow. If you drove through a puddle of water with a smooth/bald tire it would ride right up on top of the water. The tire would act as a round sled and you could not stop or turn your vehicle. You would just got straight! The same goes for snow, the minute those tiny pieces of paper that we talked about loose contact with the concrete or asphalt you have zero control. It's all a sled from there!
I've often heard phrases like these:
"I want the cheapest tire for my car because I'm getting rid of it."
"I want the least expensive tire because it's my son or daughters car."
"I don't drive the car that often so I don't want to spend a lot of money."
All it takes is one split second & a lot just changed! You want the car to stop or turn but it comes back to the tires and the strips of paper.
I get it, tires are not cheap but what is? Consider what an insurance deductible costs or more important yours or somebody else's safety or life.
